The Five Orlando City players that have to prove a point this season.

February 22, 2018

The new season is upon us and we have seen so many new faces come into the Lions’ team. Some have also stayed on from last year, but one thing is certain – the competition for a place in the starting line up is still very hot.

After losing the likes of Kaka and the OC record goal scorer Cyle Larin, the fans would expect some players to step up and make a name for themselves. In this article, we look at some players that have a point to prove ahead of the new season.

1. Justin Meram
As the most accomplished member of this team, Meram is perhaps the closest signing to the famous Kaka in terms of experience and the fans would hope he can fire them to the MLS title this year. He has played in the MLS since 2008 and netted 14 times last year, he was also a runner-up in the MLS in 2015. He has a point to prove as many fans and the younger players would be looking at him for guidance.

2. Dom Dwyer
Dom Dwyer is the almost certain to be the starting striker this season after the departure of Cyle Larin, but he would need to prove that he deserves to be picked. He netted only 4 goals in 975 minutes last season and that would not be enough to fire Orlando to the MLS title, he would need to be as prolific as he was in the 2014 season when he netted 23 times for Sporting Kansas City.

3. Oriol Rosell
Coming from Spain and even the famous La Masia academy puts enough pressure on Rosell already, however, after winning the MLS title in the year 2013 with Sporting Kansas City, fans are expecting him to show that he can help them win it as well. He has also played 12 games already this season in Portugal and should come in as one of the fittest players for the Lions.

4. Josue Colmán
As one of the highly rated young Paraguayans in the world at the moment, Colman has to show that he would live up to the expectations that have been placed on him. He also comes with a winner’s mentality after winning the Clausura last year, most fans expect him to be a starter, he has to perform if he wants to avoid being traded at the end of this season.

5. Chris Mueller
Not many SuperDraft picks end up as successes, but Mueller would be hoping to be different. He has already started his Lions career well, scoring 3 goals in their preseason scrimmages so far. Fans would hope he can take that form to the MLS when the league starts and force his way into the Lion’s starting Eleven.
