The new MLS season is upon us and several teams have begun building for a successful campaign.
Several players have been added to the MLS from all over the world with many coming from South America.
Since the Los Angeles Galaxy defended the MLS Cup in the 2012 season, no other team has successfully won back to back crowns, this should excite the fans of all the teams as they can take the title from Toronto FC, despite them winning MLS Cup and MLS Supporters Shield.
Orlando City may be seen as being too ambitious to be looking to win the MLS title as they are just 3 years into the league season. That doesn’t mean they should not target the title after all Houston Dynamos have two titles in just seven seasons in the MLS.
The fans of Orlando City can also dream of winning a trophy this season, here are some reasons why we think so.
1. More Squad depth
Although we lost Kaka at the end of last season, the Brazilian left without winning an MLS Cup for the Lions. Lions businesses in the transfer market this offseason has been impressive. Ahead of the new season, almost every position in the Orlando City has two players. This will help to switch tactics as well as cover for injured players. With enough fit players to play through the season, we could win the MLS.
2. Goals from everywhere in the field
All great teams do not rely on a single individual to help them with goals, and one area the Lions have made a lot of signings before the new season is in offense. When Kaka and Cyle Larin left, we all wondered where the goals would come from, but the likes of Justin Meram, Stephano Pinho, Dom Dwyer, and Josue Colman gives hope of non-reliance on just the centre forward for the goals.
3. Switching tactics
Another benefit having a big squad is that you can become unpredictable to your opponents by switching tactics. Last season coach Kreis used the 4-4-2 formation for a large part. With so many players at his disposal this year, he can now experiment with several tactics and he would also be able to change tactics at different times in a game.
4. Potential to score more goals than conceded
Last season, Orlando finished the campaign with a negative goal difference. While some fans would say the reason was that the defense conceded too many goals, in truth if the attack can score as many goals that would not be a problem. Europeans teams like Liverpool are guilty of conceding many goals yet they still outscore their opponents because their attack makes up the numbers.
This season, the Lions have the potential to score more than they concede and that could lead them to the MLS title.
