This is what Orlando City’s defense will look like for next season

February 5, 2018

With Amro Tarek’s signing, the Lions got 12 reinforcements for 2018 campaign after many players left at the end of last season.

However, most of these new footballers are forwards or offensive midfielders who bring strength to the front lines and increase the chances of scoring, on the other hand, just a few transfers are dedicated to grant a solid defense.

In fact, the offensive signings have a few huge names on the list, being Sacha Kljestan, Justin Meram and Josue Colmán the most representatives. Whereas, the backline introduced not-so-well known players although having Oriol Rosell on it.

Nevertheless, the new center-backs, full-backs and defensive midfielders could bring a breath of fresh air and show they are on the same level as the big names in Orlando City.

Likewise, some of them have experience in mid-level European leagues, meaning it could be enough to demonstrate they have the capacities to perform on the Major League Soccer.

In addition, taking in account Jason Kreis’ plans in this preseason, the back line might contribute to dominate matches throughout the season by developing a high pressure on the opposite offensive, making the rival to lose the ball in their own field.

A key factor of the potential performance on the pitch by the new defensive players are their last season’s stats and how much time they spent on the field. Regarding this particular case, here are the numbers:

Oriol Rosell – Former Sporting CP / Portimonense (Portugal) – CDM – 2017/2018 season:

*Oriol has played officials matches this 2018 (till Jan. 14)

Appearances/Minutes played = 18 / 1343’

Goals received = 29

Goals scored/Assists = 1 / 0

Yellow cards/Red card = 3 / 0

RJ Allen – Former New York City – RB – 2017 season:

Appearances/Minutes played = 15 / 1008’

Goals received = 19

Goals scored/Assists = 0 / 2

Yellow cards/Red card = 3 / 0

Mohamed El-Munir – FK Partizan Belgrade (Serbia) / Dinamo Minsk (Belarus) – LB – 2016/2017 season:

*El-Munir played only 2 officials matches in 2017/2018 season with Partizan (not on the stats)

Appearances/Minutes played = 11 / 690’

Goals received = 6

Goals scored/Assists = 1 / 0

Yellow cards/Red card = 2 / 1

Amro Tarek – Former Wadi Degla FC (Egypt) – CB/RB – 2017/2018 season:

*Tarek has played officials matches this 2018 (till Jan. 16)

Appearances/Minutes played = 11 / 905’

Goals received = 17

Goals scored/Assists = 0 / 0

Yellow cards/Red card = 2 / 0

Cam Lindley, PC Giro and Richie Laryea:

While PC and Richie both come from Orlando City B, youngster Lindley came in a trade with Chicago Fire.

They all will look forward to demonstrate they are capable of being part of the main team and may find a spot on the initial roster.

Lindley and Richie are both CDMs with great physical condition. On the other hand, Victor developed his playstyle as a left-back that can perform all over the left wing, giving Kreis even more options for the defensive sector.
