Five European Central defenders Orlando City can sign for free this season

January 28, 2018

With the new MLS season fast approaching, teams are beginning to strengthen every area of their team, and the Orlando City Lions have not been left out.

The Lions have, however, been signing more offensive players and makes us wonder who would be tasked with stopping the opposing attackers from scoring.

Kaka’s stint in the MLS with the Lions has shown that there is always value in the European market even if these players are coming to the end of their careers.

In this article, I take a look at some of the top center backs Orlando City can consider signing as they would be free agents in the European market by the end of this European season.

1.    Giorgio Chiellini, 33 years, Juventus

This Italian defender may be 34 years old by August, but the fact that Chelsea are still looking to sign him means that he still has enough to offer. He has played 22 games already this season and would provide the leadership Orlando City needs at the back to stop conceding needless goals. He has won 6 Serie A titles among other trophies.

2.    Miranda, 33 years, Inter Milan

This 33 years old Brazilian is ever reliable. He was one of the most trusted players of Atletico Madrid’s manager, Diego Simeone before making the move to the Serie A. His contract is also expiring after this month and the Italians have not resumed talks of a new deal. He has played 18 games this season already and he also won the La Liga with Atletico Madrid.

3.    Iván Marcano, 30 years, FC Porto

Although he comes from Spain a country that produces some of the world’s best players, Marcano has earned his corn outside the La Liga. He has won the Russian League, Greek League, and the Greek Super Cup in his journeyman career. He has played 32 games for FC Porto this season, yet it seems as though the Portuguese side would not be renewing his deal, their loss could be Orlando City’s gain.

4.    Diego Reyes, 25 years, FC Porto

Reyes has developed into one of the finest Mexican defenders of his generation, and a move back closer to home with Orlando City should interest him. He is the winner of the Mexican league, the Gold Cup, and an Olympic medal. He has played 14 times for FC Porto this season and should bring so much protection to the Lions at the back.

5.    Florentin Pogba, 27 years, Saint Etienne

One major benefit of signing Pogba would be the commercial pull he would bring to the Orlando City brand because of his famous brother. That been said the France-born Guinea defender is a solid center back. He has proved over and over again that he is a reliable center back. He has played only 6 times for the French side this season which suggests they would most likely not renew his deal.
